Someone you care about has just landed on Gasparilla Island after a long absence, or never left it through their final years. The flowers waiting at the door are the small thing you can do from where you are. The order is rarely casual. It is a homecoming for someone who has just opened a house that has been closed for six months, an anniversary at the Gasparilla Inn, or a sympathy arrangement to a permanent resident in their nineties. Same-day delivery is possible. It requires that the partner florist on the mainland builds the arrangement that morning, crosses the causeway with it, and has the gate code or the recipient's cell number on the brief.
There is one road onto Gasparilla Island. The Boca Grande Causeway is a private toll bridge that runs from Placida on the mainland out across the Intracoastal. Every delivery vehicle pays the toll on the way in and on the way back out. The bridge stays open in fair weather and closes ahead of any named tropical storm in the Gulf. If a hurricane is in the forecast, deliveries to the island are suspended before the closure, then resume when the road reopens. On a clear day, order before 1PM and the arrangement is at the door that afternoon.
Flowers from under $60 with $16.95 flat delivery. Same-day cutoff is 1PM weekdays and 10AM Saturdays. Call 800-946-5457 if you want to talk it through.
Florist Guidance
Joan, NCCPF Certified Florist · 30 years on the bench · 40,000+ arrangements · about our team
Gasparilla Island is USDA Zone 10a, sometimes 10b at the south end. Average winter low sits around forty degrees. Hard freezes essentially do not happen here. Summer highs sit in the low nineties with humidity over eighty percent. Salt air comes in from three sides off the Gulf. That is the climate. The stems that work on a beachfront porch are not the same ones that work in a Manhattan apartment, and the difference shows up fast. Soft-petaled roses on an exposed porch in July lose half their vase life inside a day. Chrysanthemums, carnations, and tropical foliage handle the salt air and the heat. They are not the prestige stems. They are the ones that hold.
The Miami Gateway handles about eighty percent of cut flower imports into the United States. The drive from Miami to a partner florist near Gasparilla Island runs under a hundred and fifty miles. Imports clear customs in the morning and reach the partner florist's bench within a day. That is one of the shortest cool-chain runs in the country. Florida also grows its own tropical foliage commercially. Heliconia, anthurium, bird of paradise, ginger stems. A florist close to the area can include those in a Boca Grande arrangement on the same day they were cut, which is a freshness advantage most of the country cannot match.
Hurricane Ian made landfall at Cayo Costa in September 2022, three miles from Gasparilla Island, with five to seven feet of storm surge crossing the village. Milton followed in 2024 with another five-foot surge. When a named storm enters the Gulf, every partner florist serving the island suspends deliveries ahead of the causeway closure. Orders placed for delivery during a hurricane window are held until the island reopens. That is not a service limitation. It is an honest service description for a barrier island address.
The permanent population of Boca Grande skews to the late sixties and seventies, and sympathy demand is steady through the year. There is no funeral home on the island. The two closest are Englewood Community Funeral Home on McCall Road and Kays-Ponger and Uselton on Englewood Road, both about five miles north across the causeway. A casket spray of white roses and seeded eucalyptus holds through an air-conditioned chapel temperature without losing shape. For a graveside service in Florida sun, the rules change. Waxy stems and tropical foliage hold up. Soft-petaled garden roses do not.
The Gasparilla Inn and Club has been the anchor venue on the island since 1913. Wedding florals, anniversary dinner arrangements, Tarpon Tournament awards events. The Inn runs cool indoor spaces and hot outdoor patios within twenty feet of each other. The arrangement format that travels between those two zones without collapsing is the one we end up recommending most often.

Three patterns account for most of the orders that come into Boca Grande. Seasonal homecomings, sympathy for a permanent resident, and an anniversary or special occasion at the Gasparilla Inn. The partner florists in or near Englewood have built these for years.
Opening someone else's winter home from a thousand miles away is a small act of love. The flowers waiting on the kitchen counter say you were thinking about her arrival before it happened. The recurring November and December order from Boca Grande is the homecoming arrangement. The owners are flying in from somewhere cold, the island house has been closed for six months, and the buyer wants flowers on the counter when they walk through the door. The order works if we know the arrival window and have a gate code or a cell number.
For something that holds through the jet-lag adjustment, a housewarming arrangement or a kalanchoe basket is the safer pick over cut flowers. A kalanchoe tolerates a partial-day wait at a gate, holds for ten days inside, and does not need the recipient to manage stems on the morning they have just unpacked.
For homecoming arrangements I steer most callers toward a potted plant once they hear the timing math. Cut flowers are still possible. The plant is the safer choice. If the recipient is delayed and the arrangement is left at the gate in summer, soft stems will not survive a long porch wait. A kalanchoe will.
Sending sympathy across a causeway to an address you cannot get to yourself is its own kind of helplessness. The arrangement is one of the few levers you can pull from wherever you are. The permanent population of Gasparilla Island is older than most US suburbs, and the sympathy calls are steady through the season. Most services for island residents are held on the mainland, at one of the Englewood funeral homes or in a private home. The arrangement may be going to the funeral home directly, to a private residence on the island, or to the family staying at the Inn for the service.
For traditional sympathy arrangements, the partner florist will steer toward whatever fits the venue and the service format. Tell us the funeral home name or the home address when you book and we will route from there.
Sympathy for an island address means the arrangement has to clear the causeway and hold in whatever temperature waits on the other side. For a service at one of the Englewood chapels the conditioning is the same as any air-conditioned funeral home. For an arrangement going to a private home on the island, where the family may be coming and going, a casket spray sitting in a hot foyer is a different proposition. White lisianthus and white roses hold better than I would have expected in Zone 10 humidity, but only inside. On a porch they will not.

Browse plants and arrangementsAnniversaries at the Gasparilla Inn are usually long marriages marking another year, and the people doing the marking want the room to look like it knows the date. Flowers waiting at the front desk or in the room are the part that says the date is remembered, before the dinner reservation does. The Gasparilla Inn has hosted anniversary dinners, candlelit reservations, and milestone celebrations on the island since 1913. The order from out of town for a couple staying at the Inn is one of the more common premium calls we take from Boca Grande.
For an anniversary arrangement at the Inn, the partner florist will coordinate the timing with the property. For a private home anniversary, the arrangement can be there before the couple sits down to dinner. Romance arrangements work in both settings; the question is whether the dinner is indoors or on a Gulf-facing patio.
After thirty years of wedding florals and anniversary dinners, I have learned that the format matters more than the stem list when an arrangement is moving between AC and outdoor heat. A roomy compote of garden roses and stock looks beautiful indoors at the Inn but wilts visibly on a Gulf-front patio inside an hour. Anthurium and tropical foliage with focal blooms hold in both. Fragrant stock perfumes an indoor dinner but disappears in the salt-air breeze outside. The partner florist will ask about the setting before the order goes out.
The long-tail orders to Gasparilla Island include thank-you arrangements for property managers, welcome flowers for guests at the Inn, Tarpon Tournament celebrations, and the standing weekly order from a few permanent residents who like fresh flowers on the table.
If the timing is uncertain or the recipient is hard to reach, the safer pick is a plant basket. A kalanchoe or a mixed dish garden holds for ten to fourteen days inside, looks intentional, and does not require the recipient to manage anything on arrival. Cut flowers are still on the table. The plant is just the more reliable choice when the address is on the island.

During tropical storm or hurricane activity in the Gulf, the causeway closes and deliveries to the island pause until it reopens.
$16.95 flat fee covers any address inside the Boca Grande delivery zone.
ZIP code 33921 plus the Placida and Cape Haze addresses near the mainland end of the causeway.
The partner florist crosses the Boca Grande Causeway and delivers to the address on the brief. If the property is on a private road or inside a gated community, give us the gate code or the recipient's cell number in the delivery notes. If the order is going to the Gasparilla Inn, give us the guest name and the room or event reference; the front desk routes from there.

What callers ask
The question I take most from Boca Grande callers is whether a delivery can be timed to the recipient's arrival. Seasonal owners fly in from somewhere cold, the house has been closed for six months, and the buyer wants flowers waiting on the kitchen island when they walk through the door. The answer is usually yes. We need the arrival window and a cell number or a gate code if the property is private. If the recipient is delayed and the arrangement is left at the gate in summer, soft stems will not survive a long porch wait.
For homecoming arrangements specifically I steer most callers toward a plant basket. A kalanchoe or a small dish garden tolerates a partial-day wait at a gate, holds for ten days inside, and does not require the recipient to manage stems on a morning when they have just unpacked. Most people land there once they hear the timing math.
Joan, NCCPF Certified Florist, on the homecoming call she takes every week through the season.
The order routes to a partner florist near Englewood or Port Charlotte, the closest mainland addresses with the volume to serve the island reliably. The arrangement is built that morning, driven across the causeway, and delivered to the address inside the same-day window. The partner florist handles the bridge logistics. You will get an email when the arrangement is on its way and another when it has been delivered.
If something goes wrong, the number is 800-946-5457. We are a small distributed team and we pick up the calls Monday through Friday. The email is [email protected]. I have had hundreds of conversations about substituted stems, late deliveries, wrong addresses, and the answer is the same each time. We call the florist, find out what happened, and sort it out. Most issues are sorted inside an hour.
I get it. If you spent $250 on an arrangement for a homecoming you have been planning since September and the flowers show up wrong, the disappointment is not small. We are seven people. The person who answers the phone is the person who calls the florist. Same number Monday through Friday, plus a 10AM Saturday window. We do not make you wait two days for a callback. That part actually works.
