In that window, conditioning matters more than the catalog picture. Chrysanthemums are the stem I trust when the arrangement has to hold through several days of visiting, prayer, or observance. The red-and-gold palette from Lunar New Year does not automatically carry into April. For Vietnamese families marking Tết, the traditional stem is hoa mai, yellow apricot blossom, but it is not a reliable US supply item through a national network. If a caller asks for it, I tell them that peach blossom may be the practical substitute, and I would rather say that plainly than let the florist improvise at the bench.
Hospital deliveries need a different kind of precision. Chinese-American patients may have a Western romanization on file that differs from the name used at home. If the desk cannot match the patient, the florist cannot complete the delivery cleanly. A vase arrangement holds better than a hand-tied bunch in a ward or waiting area. Most hospital desks do not have spare vases, and a bunch without water can fail before the patient sees it. I avoid lilies for hospital rooms because fragrance and pollen can be a problem. Chrysanthemums are often the steadier choice for Alhambra hospital orders: low fragrance, durable, and easier to place on a bedside table.

I have made more chrysanthemum arrangements than I can count. The stem earns its place because it is steady. It holds shape, it travels better than many softer flowers, and it does not fill a hospital room or visitation room with heavy fragrance. That matters in Alhambra, where the same week can involve a hospital delivery, a funeral home delivery, and a grave visit with very different color rules.

For Alhambra orders, I look for the registered name, the room or wing if supplied, and any note that tells the florist whether this is a hospital, funeral, Qingming, or household delivery. Those few words save time later.
