The Market fills the Furniture District with tens of thousands of buyers, hotels book out to Greensboro, and streets around the showrooms reroute around shuttle traffic. High Point sits in the same humid Piedmont band I have worked my whole career, hot and wet from June into September, and that decides what survives on a porch here. Chrysanthemums and carnations hold their shape for a week in that heat. Hydrangea looks lovely in the cooler and rough by three in the afternoon on a July doorstep. When someone is sending to a house where nobody will be home until evening, I steer them toward the stems that can wait.
Close to four-fifths of the cut flowers in this country come up through Miami first. From there they run the refrigerated road up to the Atlanta hub, then reach the crossing at Greensboro and fan out the last short leg into High Point. A rose that clears Miami on a Tuesday can be on a Piedmont bench by Thursday. That short final leg is the reason same-day actually works here.
Sympathy is most of what I take from a city like this, and High Point is not one tradition. A Baptist or AME homegoing is a celebration, and those families often want color, standing sprays, gold and purple, not the muted whites people assume. A Catholic funeral Mass runs on a tighter clock, usually the morning of, so the church flowers have to arrive early. The two Quaker Meetings in town hold a plainer service, and from what callers have told me flowers are not always wanted there, so I ask before I assume. Family sends the casket spray. Friends send a standing spray to the funeral home.
For a hospital order, the thing that trips people up is which hospital. Wake Forest Baptist on North Elm is the full inpatient hospital, and they will not confirm a patient to a stranger, so I need the recipient's legal name and a room or floor. The Cone Health site on Willard Dairy is an emergency department only. A get-well arrangement meant for a multi-day stay does not belong at an ED; it goes to Wake Forest Baptist or to the house after discharge. Nothing with heavy pollen or scent for a hospital room either, and if the room is on the oncology floor, from what I have seen they will not take flowers at all, so I check first. A hospital room has no vase and no scissors, so I steer people toward something already arranged in its own container, ready to set on the tray.
High Point also has more assisted-living and memory-care under one zip code than most cities its size. At the larger communities like Pennybyrn or Providence Place the flowers reach a front desk, not the resident's door, so a living plant a staff member can carry in beats a cut arrangement that needs water by noon. For a memory-care room I keep the scent light and the container stable.

What people send to High Point, and how to get each one right
People send flowers to High Point for all the usual reasons, and a couple that only make sense here. If you want to skip ahead, most of the range is same-day when you order before 1PM. Otherwise, here is what comes up most.
Sympathy and funeral flowers
Sympathy flowers are the order most people have never placed before, and they are placing it on the worst week of someone's life. If you do not know where to start, you are not doing it wrong. Most people don't.
Flowers will not fix the week, and everyone sending them knows it. They send them anyway, because they carry the thing you cannot get on a plane to say yourself. The flowers last a week; the card the family reads at the service ends up in a drawer for years.
The first fork is simple: are you family, or a friend? Family usually handles the casket spray. Friends send a standing spray to the funeral home, or an arrangement to the house. Both live under sympathy and funeral flowers, and if it is going to the family's home rather than the service, flowers for the home are the gentler choice.
If the card stops you, keep it plain. "Thinking of you and your family" is enough, and no one is grading the words.
Joan's read on a High Point service
Before I recommend anything I ask about the service. A homegoing at a Baptist or AME church here usually wants color and a standing spray with some size to it, not a muted white one. A Catholic Mass wants white, and it wants the flowers there early, before the service starts. And I ask whether the family is Quaker, because a Meeting for Worship may not want florals at all. Get the tradition right and the rest of it sorts itself out.

Thank-you and corporate flowers for Market week
You closed something at Market, or a rep looked after you all week, and now you want to say thank you before you fly out. The worry is usually the same one: how much is the right amount, and whether it can even reach a showroom while the show is on.
On the amount, the senders who call about this every April and October almost always overthink it. A good desk arrangement reads as generous without trying too hard, and the florist prices it to the room, not to the logo on the door.
A welcome arrangement on a showroom desk, a gift to a buyer's hotel room, a thank-you after a deal closes. It all lives under corporate gifting and thank-you flowers, and it all runs into the same Market-week routing we plan around.
For a showroom desk, I stay away from anything soft. It sits under warm lights all week, so a compact arrangement of chrysanthemums or a small orchid holds up far longer than roses will. You want something that still looks sharp on day four, because that is how long the show runs.

Most of these orders are for a parent or grandparent you cannot get to this week, at one of the assisted-living or memory-care communities High Point has more of than most cities its size, like Pennybyrn or Providence Place. Sometimes it is a birthday. Often it is just to say you are thinking of them.
If you are wondering whether it will even register when her memory is not what it was, it might mean more to you than to her, and that is still worth sending.
For an older recipient a living plant often lands better than cut flowers, and for a milestone an 80th-birthday arrangement is worth a look.
At the larger communities the flowers reach a front desk before they reach the room, and they can sit there a while, so I lean toward a dish garden or a sturdy plant a staff member can walk straight in without it needing water first. For a memory-care room I keep the fragrance light. A plant she can keep after the blooms are done tends to mean more than a bouquet that is gone in a week. In a room that does not get many visitors, a plant on the sill is a small thing to tend to, and it changes a little each day.

The calls change twice a year
I have been on the phones since 2018, and High Point is one of the few markets where I can tell the season from the questions. Most of the year it is sympathy, hospital rooms, and the aged-care communities. Then late April comes, and October, and suddenly half the High Point calls are businesses sending into the show, people who have never ordered from us before wanting a desk arrangement at a showroom by the time the doors open.
What I tell all of them is the same thing. Give me the building and the booth, not just the company, because during Market the company name gets you to the right building and no further. The callers who plan a day ahead get exactly what they wanted. The ones who ring at noon mid-show get a tighter window and a longer conversation. It is the one stretch of the year this quiet furniture city, proud enough of its trade to have built the World's Largest Chest of Drawers on North Hamilton Street, turns into a rush.

The order I most often have to fix here is an aged-care delivery that lands at a busy front desk and just sits. A while back one to a memory-care wing did not reach the resident until the next morning. That was on us for not flagging it as a desk drop, so I called the family, re-sent it that morning, and waived the delivery fee. Now I note the wing and the resident, and call the desk to confirm someone walked it in. Our Saturday cutoff is 10AM as well, so for a weekend visit, order by Friday. If a delivery ever stalls, I am at 800-946-5457, and I chase it myself.
