Lilies are the first thing I rule out; a lot of wards restrict them outright because of the pollen, or sometimes just the scent in a small room. Chrysanthemums are my go-to instead. They hold their shape and color through days of dry, recycled hospital air in a way roses and dahlias don't, and they still look considered rather than clinical. A vase with some water beats a foam arrangement almost every time, because someone can top it up without thinking about it.

There's rarely a good moment to think through the details when you're sending sympathy flowers, so we try to take that off your plate as much as we can.
