Brandon's summer is humid subtropical. I'm in Piedmont North Carolina taking the calls, but I know what survives a Florida porch in August. Chrysanthemums give you 10 to 14 days at that temperature; carnations 7 to 14, with the water changed. Hydrangeas, sweet peas, delphiniums I steer away from in June through September. They collapse fast.

Supply for Brandon comes through Miami. Shipments clear customs at Miami International, run up I-75 in refrigerated trailers, and reach the Tampa Bay wholesale cluster in about four to five hours. And vase format, not hand-tied: a hand-tied bunch means someone on the ward has to find a container and cut stems, which doesn't happen quickly.

Sympathy in Brandon spans several traditions because the demographics do. Just under half the population is white non-Hispanic and the Southern Baptist funeral practice still anchors a lot of services, with Bell Shoals Church the largest SBC congregation in the area. Hillsboro Memorial Gardens on West Brandon Boulevard handles most of the volume. Brandon Cremation & Funeral Services on North Parsons is the smaller independent option. Stowers Funeral Home traces back to the Brandon founding family in the 1880s and still operates. About a quarter of Brandon is Hispanic or Latino, mostly Catholic by tradition, which means a velorio the evening before the service. Flowers should arrive before then. White roses, carnations, or lilies. Lilies are fine at a funeral home; just not the hospital. Around November first the marigold orders pick up: orange marigolds for the graveside at Limona Cemetery and the older sections of Hillsboro. About one in six Brandon residents is Black, and the homegoing service is its own form: colorful, abundant, often with custom shapes. The first question I ask every sympathy caller, regardless of tradition, is the same one: are you immediate family, or are you a friend? What I learned about hospital flowers, the long way

In the Greensboro shop I ran until 2018, I built more hospital arrangements than I can count. The mistake that taught me the lily rule wasn't one delivery. It was a pattern.

The standard sympathy build had white stargazer lilies as a centerpiece for decades. They were the default for any send involving condolences or recovery. We didn't think much about it until the calls started coming back. A daughter who'd ordered a "comforting" arrangement for her mother's oncology wing room, and the floor staff had quietly moved the flowers to the waiting room. A son whose father was on a transplant ward, and the arrangement got refused at the desk. These weren't dramatic complaints. They were small, embarrassed phone calls. "I think there was an issue with the flowers."

What I changed: every hospital order that crossed my counter got reviewed for lilies, even if the arrangement was named on a card that included them.
